The Trnava Declaration on Character Education

The Trnava Declaration on Character Education was adopted at the European Character and Virtue Association (ECVA) Conference held in Trnava, Slovak Republic, in June 2026.

The Declaration brings together the shared commitment of researchers, educators, school leaders, policymakers, and civil society representatives to recognising character education as a fundamental dimension of excellent education. It highlights the importance of developing the intellectual, moral, civic, and performance virtues that enable young people to flourish and contribute responsibly to society.

The Declaration calls for greater recognition and support for character education across European institutions, educational authorities, schools, universities, and research communities, and reaffirms ECVA’s commitment to advancing this agenda through research, professional networks, policy dialogue, educational resources, and international cooperation.
